Durvillaea - A Genus of Brown Algae
Durvillaea Antarctica is found on the coast of Chile, Macquarie Island; southern New Zealand is a type of algae. It was first described in 1822. After revision in 1892, it was named Durvillaea Antarctica. This name was given respecting the memory of Jules Dumont'urville. This alga has a unique honeycomb-like structure, and so it floats and does not have air bladders. This helps and provides resistance against strong waves.
It can settle other coastlines because of its honeycomb structure; its blades help in giving strength. It can carry communities from one shore to another. Their movement depends on environmental factors, which include solar radiation, temperature, and winds. They can stay afloat for a total of 210 days. If the plants detach due to specific environmental factors, they often disperse offshore.
Uses:
Māori culture:
It is used to make traditional Mahori bags which are used to propagate live shellfish. They are also used to store water. Gear for sports can also be made with its help. Mutton-bird chicks are also being carried with the help of these bags.
Chilean Culture:
In Chilean cuisine, leaves of this species are used after they are harvested from the coast of Chile for several recipes. Salads and stews, a combination of solid food ingredients, are made with their help.
Life Cycle:
It is reproduced asexually. In this, egg and sperm are released in water, and they fuse together. Large algae can produce 100 million eggs in a period of twelve hours. Their production usually happens in the winter season.
Benefits:
Durvillaea Antarctica has its own benefits, which are given below.
Glucose Lowering:
This alga is very beneficial in lowering our glucose of blood. It helps lowering glucose in the blood. Inhibition of two fundamental enzymes during the digestion process helps in lowering it.
Fatty Liver:
It absorbs water with the help of a gel created by soluble fibers, so it effectively reduces a fatty liver.
Vitamins and Minerals:
It is rich in vitamins and minerals and contains 10 times more calcium than milk glass. It also consists of 6 times more iron than spinach. In addition to this, it has interesting doses of calcium, manganese, and minerals.
Vegans:
It is great for vegans because it has a complete amino acid profile. It contains Vitamin B12 and Vitamin E.
Immune System:
It increases the defense mechanisms against viruses, bacteria, fungi, and cancer cells. It strengthens our immune system.
